M-EC is a privately-owned, multi-disciplinary engineering and environmental consultancy operating nationally. We serve both private and public sector clients, including residential, commercial, industrial, retail, leisure, education and healthcare.


We are currently looking for a dynamic lighting graduate/consultant to become an integral part of our lighting department at M-EC. In this role, you will be a vital member of our Lighting and Daylight team, actively contributing to a diverse range of projects spanning residential, commercial, and public sector domains. Your primary responsibilities will involve conducting daylight and sunlight assessments alongside lighting impact assessments. You will engage in various tasks such as modelling, surveys, and assessment work, including formulating effective mitigation strategies tailored to meet client requirements.

Collaborative teamwork is crucial in this position, as you will liaise and cooperate closely with colleagues from different disciplines throughout the organisation. Additionally, you will participate in public consultation events client meetings, and engage with third parties to facilitate the submission of reports and designs for third-party approvals. Your commitment to delivering exceptional service to our clients, ensuring client satisfaction, and fostering future opportunities for the company is paramount. Flexibility is key, as you may need to work additional hours to meet project deadlines and attend essential meetings and events.

Job requirements


Key role responsibilities:

  • Management of clients and projects, including regular communication, obtaining feedback on performance, agreeing fee proposals and timescales;
  • Regular communication both internally and externally, obtaining feedback on performance from clients, agreeing fee proposals and timescales;
  • Liaise fully with clients, other staff members and statutory bodies to ensure efficient progress with commissions;
  • Prepare calculations, technical documents, reports and correspondence and ensure delivery of quality, accurate and efficient work which has undergone rigorous checking procedures throughout the whole process;
  • Site visits; attendance at meetings with team, clients and suppliers. Occasional requirement to attend events and meetings outside of normal office hours;
  • Follow a continued professional development/ structured programme of training and achieve continuing professional development (CPD) per year;
  • Other duties as may occasionally be required to support the needs of the business.


Key skills, experience and attributes required:

  • Demonstrable relevant experience in lighting, including Lighting Impact Assessments and Daylight/Sunlight Assessments.
  • Working towards becoming a member of the Institute of Lighting Professionals;
  • Hold a valid CSCS card; support to obtain one will be provided if not;
  • Detailed knowledge of technical guidance, including BRE Daylight guidance standards/regulations and good practice;
  • Awareness of current legislation, regulations and best practice;
  • Proficient in the use of AutoCAD software;
  • Experience in undertaking Daylight, Sunlight and Overshadowing modelling, either with Sketchup or Waldrum Tools preferred.
  • Proficient in the use of relevant lighting software;
  • Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office;
  • Strong writing skills and excellent client liaison;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team. This will also involve working with various other disciplines and offices within M-EC and external organisations;
  • Self-motivated individual with a desire to not only work within the company but also have ambition to help it grow and develop. Mentoring/supervision of trainee staff to develop their knowledge and skills;

Hold a full, clean driving licence and have your own private car with insurance for business use.

Employment Package:

  • Competitive salary, paid on the 28th of each month.
  • Use of company vehicle
  • 9 hours a day, Monday to Friday.
  • 25 days annual leave, rising to 26 after two years of service and 27 after 5 years of service. Plus, 1 additional day for birthdays.
  • After 3 months of service, you are entitled to join the company pension scheme (5% employer contribution, 3% employee contribution). The scheme includes death on service benefit of 2x salary, rising to 4x salary after 5 years’ service.
  • After 6 months of service, entitled to join the company's private healthcare scheme.
  • Membership fees for one professional institution are reimbursed.
