MEC is a multidisciplinary development technical consultant operating nationwide, with offices in Birmingham, Brighton and Leicester. We specialise in delivering technical services to a diverse range of private and public sector clients across various industries, including residential, commercial, industrial, retail, leisure, education, and healthcare.


We are seeking a Civil Engineer/Senior Civil Engineer to become an integral part of our Civil Engineering team situated at our thriving Leicestershire or Birmingham office. We work predominately for housing developers across the midlands and have significant front orders and require an Engineer to assist with the growing team and workload.

Job requirements

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Assist Director with operation of the regional team to meet the productivity and growth aspirations of the company.  Managing numerous residential, commercial, and public sector related projects.  Liaison and co-operative working with team members, senior staff, and colleagues in other disciplines.  Potential to progress to Associate, subject to meeting targets, goals and KPIs.
  • Outputs include reports, design models, drawings, calculations, and correspondence.
  • Use specialist design software, CAD, and Microsoft Office.
  • Design of new infrastructure schemes (roads, drainage, and external works) to serve new developments.
  • Design of roundabouts, signal junctions and other S278 highway schemes.
  • Design of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) in accordance with current design guidance and legislation.
  • Management of projects to company standards including administration, client liaison, quality, fee proposals, budgeting, resource management, team briefing and invoicing.
  • Public Consultation events.  Meetings with clients, team, other disciplines, and relevant third-parties.
  • Submissions of designs for third party approvals which require pro-active communication with clients, authorities, and other agencies to ensure projects are completed to deadlines and budgets.
  • Deliver high service levels to clients and secure repeat business/future opportunities for the company.
  • Working within all offices as and when required, working additional hours, if necessary, to deliver all responsibilities and to attend meetings/events.

Key Skills and Attributes:

  • Active involvement in undertaking infrastructure design, including design models, drawings, calculations, contract documents, bills of quantities, reports, and correspondence.
  • Maintaining and developing department standards, systems, and procedures.
  • Research and development of technological innovations to aid continual growth and diversity.
  • Provide supervision, guidance, and advice to new team members and ensure all team members follow a continued professional development/programme of training to maintain the growth of the division.
  • Undertaking junior staff 1-2-1s and performance reviews.
  • Assist the Associate to prepare business plans in accordance with company financial projection targets.
  • Business development and networking.  Maintaining and growing existing client relationships, developing new opportunities, and diversifying the range of commissions.
  • Compliance with Designer’s responsibilities under the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015.  Maintain valid CSCS Card.  Working understanding of site/construction safety.
  • Regular communication both internally and externally, obtaining feedback on performance from clients, agreeing fee proposals and timescales;
  • Ensure team liaise fully with clients, other staff members and statutory bodies including Planning Authorities, Building Control, NHBC, Highway Authorities, Environment Agency, etc to ensure efficient progress with commissions.
  • Prepare and review calculations, technical documents, reports, and correspondence produced by team to ensure delivery of quality, accurate and efficient work which has undergone rigorous checking procedures throughout the whole process.  Ensure all team members follow the same procedures.
  • Site visits for inspections or investigation work; attendance at meetings with team, clients, and suppliers.  Occasional requirement to attend events and meetings outside of normal office hours.
  • Follow a continued professional development/programme of training and achieve a minimum of 12 days continuing professional development (CPD) per year.
  • Other duties as may occasionally be required to support the needs of the business.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Educated to a minimum standard of Degree (in Civil/Structural engineering or another relevant subject).
  • Member of ICE or other relevant professional body.  Hold or working towards application for Incorporated/Chartered Engineer status.
  • Proficient in the use of various computer design programmes including PDS, XPSite3D, Civils 3D, Micro drainage.
  • Working knowledge of highway and drainage design standards.
  • Working knowledge of Building Control, NHBC and Highway Authority submission and approval processes.
  • Proficient in the use of AutoCAD software.
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent written skills, particularly report writing and client liaison.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to present information in detail to senior management team and staff.
  • Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team. This will also involve working with various other disciplines and offices within MEC and external organisations.
  • Self-motivated individual with desire to not only work within the company but also have ambition to help it grow and develop.  Mentoring/supervision of trainee staff to develop their knowledge and skills.
  • Hold full clean driving licence and have own private car with insurance for business use.
